How Healthy Is Your Business?

April/2008

It's Spring.  Nature starts all over again with a burst of energy, celebrating new life with a profusion of fresh leaves and a riot of colorful blooms, ready for a new season of growth.  There was a time people got ready for a "new season of growth" by taking a spring tonic.  From what I've heard, it was a terrible concoction containing - among other things - sulfur and molasses!  It was supposed to get rid of the winter blues and instill you with a burst of spring energy.

This issue of The Leadership News is about health, and energy, and growth - of your business.  Is it ready for a "burst of spring energy"?  The first article below, 7 Minute Business Growth Health Check-Upis a quick way for you to give your business a "physical", something we ought to do, both for ourselves and our business on a regular basis.

The second article, The Business Doctor, compares an experienced consultant with a medical doctor.  An experienced consultant brings the same benefits to the health of your business as a medical doctor brings to your physical health.  And you would look for similar characteristics in each.

I hope this issue is helpful in getting your business ready for a burst of energy and a new season of growth.

By the way, a few of you are getting The Leadership News for the first time.  Back issues are available at www.jmkassociatesllc.com.

Key Growth Fitness Indicators

In a biological sense, growth starts with conception.  Cells begin to multiply and change.  Eventually, we are born but growth does not stop there.  For maybe 20 or so years more, our bodies continue to grow.  Finally, we become "mature".  Our bodies stop growing - at least in a sense (some of our waist lines may say otherwise.)

But as far as biological development of the body, growth stops.  But we do not just live out the rest of our lives in our 20 something body (wouldn't that be great?).  No, cells continue to be produced, but now, they are not "new" cells, they are "replacement" cells.  And biology tells us that those new cells are not as good as the ones they replace.  We all know what happens.  Eventually, we begin to "degrade".  We begin to "show our age".

What this tells us is that there is no such thing as "standing still" when it comes to growth.  We are either growing, or we are degrading.

This is particularly true in a business sense.  If your business isn't growing, it is dying.  There is no standing still.

So what's the health of your business?  Is it healthy and growing, or is "showing it's age" - maybe dying, perhaps slowly, but dying never the less?  Use this questionnaire to help you evaluate the health of your business.  It will take about 7 minutes.

Scoring

For questions 1 through 4:  a = 0, b = 1, c = 2, d = 3.

Add up your score.  The higher the number, the more fit your are.  If you are above 90, you are in "game" condition.  If between 60 and 90, you could do better.  If below 60, you need help bad.  Your business in probably not yet on life support, but if you do nothing, just like if you do nothing about fever and other symptoms of physical illness, you may soon find yourself with a sick patient on your hands.

We'll be glad to give your business a thorough "examination".  It will cost you nothing (ever heard that from a doctor?).  Give us a call.  770 943 3657

It's Your Business

"Be careful about reading health books.  You may die of a misprint!"

Mark Twain

Roger's nightmare occurred all too often.  In his dream, he was frantically trying to climb a sand dune.  For some reason, it was crucial to get to the top.  But every step he took up, he slid down two.  His legs felt like lead.  His lungs were about to burst.  He was exhausted.  But he had to get to the top!

"Roger, wake up.  You'll be late for work."

Slowly consciousness dawned as Gladys' words penetrated Roger's brain.  The words "late for work" finally registered.  "Late to work?  Ha!  What difference did that make."  he thought.  Everyone was always late to work at Roger's company.

"Gladys", said Roger, finally fully awake.  "I'm not going to work today."

"What?  What do you mean you're not going to work today?"  replied Gladys, frowning at Roger stubbornly laying in the bed with the covers pulled up under his chin.

"Just that, Gladys.  I'm not going to work.  Nobody likes to work there.  Everyone is always grumpy, short tempered, hollering at each other.  Nobody will take responsibility for anything.  They are always in meaningless meetings accomplishing nothing.  And just yesterday we had a meeting to try to understand why our customer complaints were through the roof and we came close to a  'Saturday Night Smackdown'.  Sales blamed Production, Production blamed Customer Support.  Everyone blamed Finance claiming invoices were always wrong and never on time.  No sir.  I'm definitely not going back to that place and that's final.  I quit!"

Roger, you can't quit." said Gladys, hands on hips, glaring at the stubborn Roger.

"And just why not?"

As Gladys stomped out of the room, she shot back over her shoulder, "Because, Roger, it's your business.  You own the place!"

I hope you are not a "Roger".  As a business owner, or CEO, you are responsible for the health of your company.  In the "health check-up" article above, how did you fare?  Do you need a doctor?

That's what consultants are - doctors, not of medicine but of business.  And just as you would no more ignore symptoms of ill-health in yourself - nor try to treat yourself - neither should you do so for your business.

So what can a 'business doctor' do for you?  First, a good consultant can tailor best practices solution processes specifically to your business.  Just like a doctor, who knows how your problems have been treated in other people, a consultant knows how your business problems have been solved by others.  There are few things new under the sun.  Why not take advantage of what someone else had already done?

The second thing a good consultant brings to bear on your business problems is experience.  Most of us are more comfortable with doctors who have been around a while.  It's the same with a consultant.  One who has been around a while can bring to bear on your problems the strength of experience.  If nothing else, an experienced consultant will view your problems with eyes unclouded with your emotion.

But maybe the most important advantage experience brings is the ability to see things you might not see.  It's one thing to be 'sick' and know it.  It's another thing to have problems of which you are unaware.  There may be symptoms you don't recognize that evidence something serious.  And few problems heal themselves.

It's all up to you.  Just as it's up to us individually to take care of our physical health, it's up to you as business owner or CEO to look after your business's health.  If someone asked you if you wanted your business to grow, you'd surely say yes.  But if someone asked you if you wanted to grow your business, you'd better think before answering yes.  A yes answer to the first question is nothing more than a wish.  A yes answer to the second question is a commitment.
